The end of another AZ winter

Sunday we got up early to make the 8 a.m. mass as it was going to be another scorching day! In the afternoon we headed for the movies to see Julie Roberts in "Mirror, Mirror." Little did we know it was a modern-day version of Snow White. It was cute, but one we sure could have skipped! It was 104 when we got out of the theater. After the movie, we stopped for a short visit with Mac & Tim. Sunday evening I did a little more organizing for our trip home. Monday morning I went to the pool early...my last swim for the year! More packing and cleaning in the afternoon. We went for our last burgers Monday night...Kathy Marcil joined us too. After burgers, Joyce & Bz came by for one more night of rummy. They stayed until after 11. We will really miss those two and all our fun evenings of cards. Tuesday morning we got up about 5 a.m. and packed our car. My anxiety level dropped as I realized we would be able to get everything in and Gary wouldn't have to tie me on the top for the trip home! Then we headed to Gilbert as Gary had a second doctor's appointment to get the results of his chest x-ray and hear what the doc had to say...He suspects COPD and told him to get into an exercise routine and use his inhalers faithfully...easier said than done! Got home in time to go to my last Tuesday bridge. Was invited to a final farewell cocktail party for this group as many of us were leaving before the next week. I have really enjoyed this group of women and will miss them next year! I nearly collapsed in bed Tuesday night...ready to tackle the long drive/ride home. We were up and out of the house by 7 a.m. Wednesday; we left the condo in "move-in" ready condition and stuffed the remainder of our belongings in the car. What an accomplishment that was! We drove as far as Pueblo, CO, Wednesday. We didn't get there until about 8 p.m. so it was a long day. Thursday was another long drive as we went as far as Pierre, SD. We drove in rain for several hours that day. Friday we hit the road about 7 a.m., stopped in Rugby for lunch and were back at the lake by 2p.m. So happy to find everything in great shape and relieved to get the car unpacked and begin putting things away. We had a full, fun-filled winter and, as always, are happy to be home safe and sound!

Our last full week

Time is running out and the temps are climbing into the 100's. Time to head for the hills! Monday we had Billy & Geraldine over for cards and supper. It was really nice so we played outside until it got dark. Tuesday I had bridge in the p.m. Lee Field had us over for hors d'oevres and drinks after bridge.
Wednesday morning I was called again for mixed bridge so I played again that afternoon. Both days I had terrible cards. Tuesday night we went to see "Hunger Games"...a very troubling & scary movie. Wednesday night we went to Slotsve's for our last get-together of cards. Thursday and Friday mornings I made it back to the pool. Most of the ladies have gone back home now. Thursday morning I had an appointment for a much-needed pedicure. We watched Netflix Thursday night. Friday morning we started cleaning, organizing and getting things ready to pack for home. Friday about 5 Joyce & Bz came for our annual "clean out the frig" dinner. We played cards until almost 11! Saturday morning I had a hair cut then Gary drove me up to the yarn shop in Mesa so I could get some yarn to knit for the ride home. Today it actually hit 100! I am getting very anxious to see if all our stuff will fit in the car for our trip home!

Another busy and fun week!

Monday morning I was off to the pool; it was a rather quiet day. We did go for burgers Monday night, but there were only 4 of us there. Guess the snow birds are heading home! Gary had a doctor's appointment with a pulmonologist who is trying to figure out what is causing his cough.
Tuesday I made it to pool again; in the afternoon I played bridge...had terrific cards and took first place. One of the neighbors invited me for cocktails and snacks after bridge. We had a quiet evening.
Wednesday we picked Brett up at the PHX airport about noon. By 3:30 we were on the golf course. It was a beautiful afternoon. For dinner we went to BJ's Brew House on Superstition Springs Blvd. We played a few card games when we got home.
Thursday afternoon we headed for the golf course again; Gary bailed after the first 9 holes, but Brett & I played 18 that day. My game was probably the best it will ever be on that course! It was a fun round of golf! We went to the Wok Inn for Chinese Thursday night and played cards until quite late.
Friday morning Brett and I went to the Swap Meet as he needed a new carry-on bag. He was amazed at all the "stuff" that is sold there. We got what he needed and did a few other errands that morning. About noon we headed to Phoenix to the Music Instrument Museum as Brett wanted to see it. We enjoyed it again as there was much we had missed the first time we were there. Brett thought it was awesome too. We ate at Organ Stop Pizza on Friday night and, as usual, played cards when we got home.
Saturday afternoon we went up to View Point golf course. It was kind of cool and windy, but we all enjoyed our game there too. Saturday night we went to Uncle Bear's for dinner. We stayed up really late playing cards Saturday night.
Sunday morning it was time for Brett to pack up as his visit was coming to an end. We took him to the airport about 10:30; his flights went as scheduled and he arrived back in GF by 6:30 Grand Forks time. We had such a good time while he was here. That afternoon we cleaned house, grocery shopped and stopped at the mall for a little shopping (for me). That night we were invited to Wipers for dinner and rummy. Terri & Don Bruester were there too and they were leaving for ND the next morning. It was a fun evening.

Easter weekend

Saturday we took time to clean the condo and do a little more grocery shopping and cooking for Easter Sunday. Other than that, it was a quiet day; I got in a bike ride and then we watched a Meryl Streep movie on Netflix Saturday night.
Sunday morning we were up early and made it to the 8 a.m. service. Luckily, we had our favorite priest again and the music was wonderful! It was a great Easter service! Alleluia!
At noon we had Mac, Tim, Gordy and Peggy here for an Easter brunch. They stayed and watched the Masters golf tournament with us in the afternoon. I took a bike ride after everyone left. Weather was perfect today!

The week of the Wysocki brothers

Monday morning we were off early to meet Carl, Gene and their wives at the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix. We were pleasantly surprised at what a wonderful collection we got to see. It was so interesting...everyone enjoyed it immensely! We spent 5 hours there including a lunch break and didn't begin to see the whole collection. They are the only museum in the US devoted solely to music and they have over 10,000 items. The displays are arranged by continents and countries and the earphones allow visitors to listen to the music as they view the videos and actual instruments used. A very worthwhile day! Carl & Judy followed us home and we joined our usual group of friends at the Hub for burgers on Monday night. No cards tonight as we were bushed!
Tuesday morning I made it to the pool and aside from bridge in the afternoon, I had a quiet day and evening. We did go to the mall as Gary needed another pair of walking shoes. Wednesday I was up at 5:30 and out the door by 7 a.m. I went to church and from there to my doctor's appointment for my pinkie. Unfortunately, the outcome was less than I had hoped. It still hurts, is crooked and likely will have to stay this way. At least after 10 weeks of wearing various splints, I am no longer needing to protect it any more.
I stopped and grocery shopped on my way home. In the afternoon I played bridge with the Wednesday group...both days I had terrible cards! Gene & Beth arrived about 5 and shortly after that Carl, Judy, Judy's sister Carol and her friend came. We had reservations at Rancho de Tia Rosa in Mesa. It was a great choice as we got to sit outside in a beautiful courtyard in a room all to ourselves. The Mexican food was wonderful! Everyone was pleased with the restaurant choice. We headed right to bed when we got home. Gene & Beth stayed with us.
Friday we were up early as we were meeting Carl & Judy at the Biosphere2 north of Tuscon for a tour of that facility. It was quite a grueling tour...lots of stairs, walking, standing and I got a little claustrophobic from being closed in at the end of the tour. It was interesting, but I was glad when it was over! We got home in time for me to take the sisters-in-law to Santan Village for a little shopping. We all went to Organ Stop Pizza for dinner that night. It too was a hit as Gene & Carl had never seen it and we stayed to hear a complete program of organ music. When we got home, we played some rummy with Gene & Beth before calling it a day!
Friday morning Gene & Beth left and Carl & Judy were also leaving for Denver. This will be a day of cleaning, shopping and re-grouping for Easter weekend.

March comes to an end!

Thursday I was off to the pool after 2 months absence due to the splint on my pinkie. My pool friends scolded me for being gone for so long. The water felt wonderful! The rest of the day was relatively quiet. Thursday evening Roger & Dorine came for a few games of pinochle and rummy.
Friday morning I got in my hour at the pool again. In the afternoon Carl & Judy arrived in PHX. We met Gene & Beth and them at the Links in Scottsdale...a very beautiful time share. We visited until evening and all went to Mimi's for dinner.
Saturday morning I work up about 5 a.m. I know it was the steroids that I've been on since my wasp bite that have been giving me so much energy! I texted Judy and told them to come as early as they wanted since we were up and raring to go. They got here about 8 a.m. and had a little breakfast. Then we went to the Swap Meet for a couple of hours and found some treasures to buy. From there we were invited to Bob & Viv Dunbars in Leisure World for lunch. Their home is really beautiful...located on the golf course. We had a great visit out on their patio. It was 94 degrees that day and the heat really got to me! We came home and I took a 5 hour nap (the first one I've had all year)! I got up for about an hour, ate a quick snack and went back to bed for about 10 more hours. I don't think I've ever slept so long at one time unless I've been sick! I was simply exhausted!
Sunday I awoke feeling very refreshed and we made it to the 8 a.m. Palm Sunday service. Our very favorite priest presided and it was a very nice service. We spent a quiet rest of the day. I went to the pool and soaked up a little sun, swam and did some reading. Heard from Anne that it was 72 degrees at home! It was only 77 here so it's time to start thinking about returning to ND!

Hectic is the word...

Saturday, the 24th, we spent the afternoon preparing for Audrey's big 80th birthday party. We managed to make ourselves presentable and arrived at the beautiful country club in Palm Springs on time! It was a fantastic party with a wonderful vocalist, great food, wine and champagne to toast Audrey's 80 years. David and Kathy did a fantastic job of getting about 80 friends and relatives together for the event. We had such a good time. We were home early enough to play a few games of round rummy.
Sunday we got up about 6:30, packed up our belongings and said goodbye to our great condo...after our embarrassing display of screaming and wailing earlier in the week, we probably won't be able to get a unit there again! We were on the road by 8 a.m. and arrived back in Mesa by 12:30. As usual, the traffic on hwy 10 was horrendous so it was good to get home safely. We unpacked, did laundry and raced to O'Sullivans to watch the Sioux in their attempt to make it to the Frozen Four...unfortunately, the Gophers were too much for the Sioux that day so we ate and left before the end of the game. We were in bed pretty early Sunday night.
Monday morning Phyllis and I did some shopping at Superstition Springs mall. In the afternoon we went for massages. That was a first for me and I must admit I did enjoy it. Monday night we had our usual card games.
Tuesday we headed for the pool for a swim and some games of bananagrams. Phyllis packed and then we went to see "The Vow"--a movie based on a true story about a woman who had a trauma to the head and lost about 5 years of her memory. We all enjoyed the movie. We came home and actually made a dinner of baked tilapia, potatoes and salad. It tasted good to have something other than restaurant food! We played cards again and stayed up until 2 a.m. Very late!
Wednesday morning Phyllis and I played a few games of cribbage before we had to leave for the airport. Their plane left early afternoon. We got home, did laundry, cleaned house and collapsed early....VERY tired! It was a fun two weeks!

Never a dull moment! March 17-24

What a week this has been! I know I won't remember all the details as it has been a blur!
We left Mesa about 8:30 Saturday morning and stopped at a truck stop somewhere in the desert for a less than delicious lunch. We arrived at our condo in Palm Springs--Vista Mirage, 400 S. Hermosa Dr., and after getting settled in we headed for the grocery store to stock up on essentials. We stayed in this same resort 2 years ago; it is very comfy with 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, kitchen, dining area, living room, pool and all the amenities of resort life. We had to be at our cousins' St. Patrict's Day party in Cathedral City by 5:30 so we didn't have any down time that day. It was so good to see Mona, Pete, Nadine and Judie again. This is the 4th year we've been able to visit them. We finished off the evening at Nadine's for more stories about our growing up years and lots of laughs!
Sunday we had a leisurely morning and spent the afternoon visiting Audrey. She is always so interested in hearing about our latest adventures. That evening we stopped and picked up a cooked chicken and made a salad and strawberries dipped in chocolate for dessert...pretty fancy dinner for us! We played rummy pretty late that night.
Monday we walked into Palm Springs shopping area downtown...it was a LONG walk! When we got back, Gary N headed for the pool and the rest of us stayed in the condo as it was pretty cool that day. Phyllis, Gary N & I went to Audrey's for coffee that afternoon. Monday night Judie and Nadine took us to the Chinese buffet for dinner and we visited at Judie's afterwards. Of course there was card playing when we got home!
Tuesday it was warm enough for us to head to the pool after our walk. Phyllis & I played a few games of Bananagrams pool side so we soaked up quite a bit of sun. We had coffee with Audrey after our swim. We dashed downtown PS to meet Cal & Julie for lunch at the Kaiser Grill. After lunch, we decided to follow them to El Paseo Drive to people watch at the Starbucks there. We were able to get a great table outside. Julie, Phyllis & I decided we needed to wander around to some of the high-end stores and we found ourselves in Sacs 5th Avenue...fortunately, they had a team of hair care people who were just ready to start a demo on their hair care products so next thing we knew Julie was signing us up for the demo...the clincher was when they told us we would be served champagne. They also did individual consults with us about what our hair needed to make it look better. Mine is so short that they didn't have many suggestions for me! However, we each purchased products and because they made a mistake on Phyllis' order, they gave each of us a lovely scarf that was supposed to be a bonus for only those who spent $100 or more so we felt like we really got our money's worth. Before exiting the store, we browsed around the shoe dept eying the $500 sandals and the 6" (or more) $8-900 stilettos! We didn't dare start trying those on. When we got home, Gary N had prepared a lovely dinner of chicken tostados and salad and we played lots of games of rummy again that night.
Wednesday was the day that Phyllis & I found out we had strong hearts! We spent about 1 1/2 hours at the pool. Upon returning to our condo, to our horror, we discovered the door was open and that it had been completely emptied out...everything we owned was gone...all our jewelry, clothes, wallets, food...there wasn't anything left! We raced down to the pool SCREAMING at Gary Newman that we had been robbed. I was hysterical as I wailed we had lost everything, everything...our money, or jewelry, etc! People at the pool all heard us and went scrambling to their units to see if they too had been robbed. Gary N went to the office to report the robbery and Phyllis and I returned to our room feeling terrified...Gary W was not in the unit as he had gone to the garage to move the car so he didn't even know anything had happened. We had no clothes except our swimming suits and cover-ups! As we rounded the corner to our unit, it occurred to us that just maybe we had been in the wrong unit. They all look exactly alike...so we raced up the steps to unit 418...put our key in the door and to our great joy found everything intact. However, by this time, Gary N was in the office reporting the theft and the gal on duty was telling him nothing like this had ever happened and she didn't know what to do...he said, "well, call 911 or call the police...do something!" About that time I rushed in to admit that all the screaming and crying was for naught as we had returned to the wrong room. She was so relieved she almost jumped over the desk and hugged me! I was a wreck and so was Phyllis! Besides the emotional strain we had just been through, now we didn't think we would want to return to the pool and be recognized by all the guests who had seen our little outburst! Gary had to go to the pool to tell everyone about our mistake. We considered dying our hair and getting new bathing suits before showing up at the pool again. That evening we had the cousins here for pizza, salad, and cheesecake with birthday candles for Nadine. They loved hearing about our fiasco! We played more cards after they left that night. What an exhausting day!
Thursday we felt too sheepish to return to the pool so after a short morning walk, we called Audrey to see if we could head to her condo and use her pool that afternoon. It was pretty hot in the sun that day. After a short swim, we helped Audrey bake some cookies. That night Pete & Mona entertained us at their unit for more good food, beverages and great stories! Once again we had to play a few hands of cards when we got home. That had become our routine!
Friday morning Phyllis and I decided that we dared appear at the pool again. We picked a table in a corner and tried to stay low-key and hoped that most people had left that we there on Wednesday. However, to our embarrassment, the lady sitting near our table started visiting with us and after a few minutes of small talk she said out of the clear blue, "You should see my daughter imitate you two from the other day...she's really good at it!" Damn! To think our story is being re-enacted by a 9 year old and probably many others that saw us that day! While we were sitting at our table with this friendly lady, I got bit by a hornet or wasp...it was very painful and my arm started to swell and turn red. I iced it, read the first-aid on Google and did what was suggested. We were due to visit Julie & Cal Nestibo (wintering here in an RV part) that afternoon so I decided to wait and watch my bite before seeing a doctor. After our visit, however, it appeared that I needed to see a doctor so off to the Eisenhower Urgent Care facility I went about 6:30 p.m. I didn't have to wait long to see a doctor and he told me I had done all the right things but added a course of prednisone to help with swelling. Whew! I was glad it wasn't any more serious than that! We made dinner with our left-overs that night and played a game of round rummy before collapsing in bed!
Saturday morning we were up about 6:30 and ready to head to the swap meet at College of the Desert. We tromped around there for at least 3 hours, visited with our cousins briefly and then stopped at Macy's as Phyllis was trying to find a new dress...no luck there so we came home starved and had more left-overs for lunch!

The madness continues...

Just the hi-lites:
Monday we cleaned house...then went for our usual burgers at the Hub with the rest of our gang.
Tuesday we grocery shopped and then I had bridge in the pm...need to note that I won second($1.25)!
Wednesday afternoon we picked Phyllis & Gary up at the airport at 5...rushed home and P & I went for pedicures. Had dinner ready by 7. Kathy Marcil joined us for a visit Wednesday eve.
Thursday we all 4 drove in to Scottsdale for lunch with Phyllis's high school classmates: Rod Conway, Gary Martinson and Loyce Helgerson. Then we did a little shopping at Fashion Square before driving back to Mesa to watch the Sioux take on Saint Cloud...great game! Sioux won 4-1. We came home and played a couple games of round rummy before hitting the sack.

March madness!

The longer we are here the busier it gets! Wednesday morning I had an apppointment for my injured pinkie. I was hoping to get the splint off...however, he informed me that I still have another month with it in a support, but the new one he gave me can get wet so that was a slight improvement. Wednesday afternoon was my bridge day with the mixed men/women group. I was lucky to get first again so I came home with $1.50! My card luck finally changed from bad to good! Wednesday late afternoon we were invited to Joyce Wiper's 65th birthday party. It was a fun gathering.
Thursday morning JoAnn Perrin came over and the two of us were off to shop at Stein Mart. I found a swim suit so I considered it a successful trip! Thursday night we were actually home!
Friday night we met Nick & JoAnn and Kathy Marcil at O'Sullivans to watch the Sioux vs Bemidji state. It was a good game; they won! Saturday after church we headed back to O'Sullivans...Mac & Tim joined us as we cheered the Sioux again and this game was very exciting...and close at the end, but the Sioux came out on top! Now they are headed for the Final Five tourny in Mpls this week. It was a fun night!
Sunday early afternoon we drove to Phoenix to visit Billy & Geraldine Siercks. We played a lawn game as it was really nice (actually a little hot in the sun) and then we played several card games before having a delicious dinner. We didn't get home until 11 pm...very late for us!

Wednesday, March 7, 2012

More busy days and nights

Seems we never lack for things to do here and people to see...Friday night we met my Tri Delta friends who are in the area and other Sioux fans at O'Sullivan's sports bar to watch UND take on Mankato State; they won 4-2 and are now in the post-season play-offs! It was a good game.
Saturday after lunch Gene & Beth drove over from Surprise. After a short visit, we headed off to church, then to Black Angus for prime rib dinners. We were celebrating our anniversary and Beth's birthday. After dinner, we went to the Mesa theater and took in the musical Me and My Girl It was delightful! We managed to play a couple of games when we got home and actually stayed up until 1 a.m. I think that is a record for us this year!
Sunday morning I made brunch and we were out of here before 11 a.m. We headed first to the Swap Meet and spent a couple of hours tromping around. Beth did find quite a few treasures so it wasn't a waste of time. After we finished our shopping, we drove out to Queens Creek to the Olive Mill for a tour and lunch. It was a great afternoon. Learned a lot about olive oil and had a very tasty salad. We got back about 4 p.m. Gene and Beth left for home about 5 and we spend a quiet Sunday night alone!
Monday was a very nice day; went for a walk and did a little housework. Monday evening we met the crew at the Hub for our usual burgers. Afterwards, Bz, Joyce and Terri Bruster came over for a few great games of rummy.
Tuesday (our 48th anniversary) was quiet except for my afternoon of bridge. Not a good day for cards again...but somebody has to lose! Tuesday night just for fun we went out to the Sonic for drive-in food. It was pretty bad!!!

February ends...

Monday morning I headed over the Great Clips for a much-needed hair cut. It had been 5 weeks since I had had one so I got my money's worth! The wind was awful on Monday; the desert dirt was blowing everywhere! Monday night when we went out to eat I tried to cover my mouth and nose to keep from breathing at all when I was outside. We met Mac, Audrey and Jim Glick at View Point for burgers. We were home early!
Tuesday I had ladies' bridge in the afternoon; terrible cards again this week! Tuesday night Dorine & Roger picked us up for taco night at the golf club; afterwards we went to Dorine's and played cards and farkle. Dorine and I cleaned the men's clock in pinochle!!! Yeah!
Wednesday afternoon I had mixed bridge; once again my cards were terrible! I enjoyed it anyway. Wednesday night we stayed home and rested~
Thursday morning I got up early and tackled the condo...much-needed cleaning! Gary tried to get the black dirt off front and back decks as well. Everything was really dirty! I took a long walk after the work was done. Thursday afternoon we went to the movie Act of Valor. It was terrific! Anyone who doesn't appreciate what our special forces do for our freedom and safety need to see this movie. People in the theater actually applauded when it was over. I can't begin to describe the type of individual like these Navy Seals who put their life on the line so we can live in a free country. However, I am so disillusioned with our country; I absolutely cannot imagine how a Christian can support any politician who favors killing unborn babies. This issue and the moral decay of our society is ruining our country...not to mention the dumbing down of our children! I visited with a retired teacher from NY at bridge and he lamented about the illiterate electorate and the terrible condition of schools in our country. There is just so much wrong and it seems there is no light at the end of the tunnel. At least to me, until we stop the murder of the unborn, we will continue to see more and more disregard for life in general...more school shootings, drug murders, etc. Anyway, I must say that my appreciation for the military was certainly reinforced while viewing the acts of pure valor that the movie portrayed. The fact that we have a son who is completing 20 years of service as a Green Beret the end of this month really makes me fill with pride for his accomplishments. Thank God for all the good, honest people in the USA who still have some moral compass!

Feb. 19-26

Sunday afternoon we met Zwaks at Desert Sands Golf Course on Baseline and played that 9-hole course. It wasn't in very good shape, but it was a beautiful day so we enjoyed ourselves. Zwaks stopped over for a short visit afterwards. Sunday night we cooled our heels!
Monday Faye & Dave came over and we went out to San Tan Village to do some shopping. When we were checking out of "Total Wine" the check-out girl broke a bottle of red wine all over herself and me! It was quite a mess! I felt sorry for her and after much work, I think I actually got all the stains out of my capris. Monday night we broke our pattern and met at Fat Willys at Viewpoint for burgers. They were great!
Afterwards we went to Zwaks for another round of 6-handed pinochle. They had bought a new table that made it comfortable for 6 of us in their motor home to play cards. It was fun, as usual!
Tuesday morning I work up feeling kind of sick...I did manage to go to bridge, but I had such terrible cards that I would have been better off staying home. We laid low Tuesday night as I was really coughing.
Wednesday I had my splint changed on my pinkie...I'm up to 4 weeks and counting! Can't wait to get rid of it! Wednesday afternoon I played bridge for the first time with a mixed group of men and women. I had fantastic luck and actually took home first prize...5 quarters! Still coughing tho so we didn't do anything Wed. evening either.
Thursday morning we met Zwaks at the View Point 9-hole course and played a round of golf. It was another beautiful day. Afterwards we had lunch at Fat Willie's and came home to finally CLEAN the condo...I was feeling better so had some energy left for a little work.
Friday at 11:30 I met 5 of my Tri Delta friends from college at the Cheesecake Factory for lunch. Faye, JoAnn Bailey, Sharon Desautel, Kathy Marcil and Connie Morwood...it was definitely a trip back in time! We shared our life's stories for over 3 hours. It was so much fun! Afterwards we were invited to Zwaks for hors d'oeuvres and pizza. We got home about 9. We saw Veronica and Larry Christenson and Dean & Shelley Blada there...more ND people visiting down here that we hadn't seen before.
Saturday was a quiet day! I went shopping alone for about 2 hours while Gary nursed his cold! We went to the 4 o'clock church service, came home and ate soup and sandwiches! We needed a day to ourselves!
Sunday Gary was still hacking so I drove up to Faye & Dave's with some things they are hauling home for us. I stayed most of the afternoon as Marlo and Cindy Lindstrom and Billy & Geraldine Siercks were there also we had a good visit with all of them. Sunday at 5 I met Eunice Ketterling, Marvel Thompson and Judy Higgins at Ruby Tuesdays for dinner. I got caught up on the campus news and news of many Bottineau people! I gave them a ride back to Eunice's in Leisure World and visited there for another hour. I was home by 9...very tired! I watched the end of the Academy awards before drifting off to much-needed sleep!

How busy can we be?

I think every week gets a little busier than the one previous! I have been faithful to get a good walk in every morning even tho it has been in the high 40's or low 50's each day. One day I could even see my breath! Can't complain, but it is kind of a surprise for that to happen here.
Monday we had burger nite at the Hub as usual. There were at least 15 of our friends and acquaintances that gathered there again. Afterwards, Zwaks and Bernsteins came over for some 6-handed pinochle. That is always fun!
Tuesday I played bridge...had a better week than last week and won 50 cents! Any time I'm in the big money it's a good day! I had the hand of my life that day...10 hearts were dealt to me. I've never seen such a hand! It was so fun to play! When I got home from bridge, Gary & I went to see the movie The Decendents. We both enjoyed it a lot! It was sad and funny at the same time. When we got home, we watched The burning bed with Farrah Fawcett on Netflix...not exactly a great theme for Valentine's Day!
Wednesday we cleaned house, did laundry, grocery shopped and in the evening, Joyce had us over for great comfort food: meat loaf, baked potatoes, etc. Gosh, home cooking tastes good! Of course we had our weekly rummy games before we came home.
Thursday I invited Zwaks and Bernsteins here for a pot luck supper...followed by more 6-handed pinochle. We women really whopped the men that night! About time!
Friday afternoon I met Kathy Marcil at the Harkins Theater and we saw Iron Lady with Meryl Streep. What a great lady that Margaret Thatcher was! She is just what we NEED desperately here in America NOW! It was another great movie. After the movie, I had Kathy, Tim and Mac here for supper and a visit. I was bushed!
Friday I was up bright and early as Val picked me up so we could go to the Swap Meet near us in Mesa. The guys had an early tee time at View Point and we spent 3 hours tramping around the swap meet taking in all the thousands of items that are sold there. It is absolutely overwhelming...especially the first time a person goes there. We didn't buy much, but vowed to return another day.
after tromping on cement floors we took our tired legs and hips to Coco's for lunch. This afternoon at 4 p.m. we made it to Holy Cross church. The church was packed so had to go to the gym for services. Really quite a cool day. Saturday night we plan to stay home!!!!

The weekend

Saturday morning we got some things packed for our overnight in Surprise at Gene & Beth's. We got over there about 2. After a short visit we went to their church in Sun City West. From church we went directly to the AZ Broadway theater to the dinner theater. The musical was "Singing in the Rain"...it is one I've never seen before so really enjoyed it. We had front row seats so even felt the rain splashing. After the show we went back to Gene & Beth's and played a couple games of Farkle.

Sunday we had planned to golf, but decided instead to take a road trip to Lake Pleasant. It was a very scenic drive and a beautiful lake...lots of huge boats, sail boats, etc. We had lunch at Dillon's on the wharf. We got back to Surprise late afternoon and left for home. Got home about 6:30. Went to bed early and read!

Another really blurry week!

Tuesday afternoon I played my second round of bridge. My cards were terrible and I was glad when it was over. Tuesday night Bernsteins and Zwaks were here for 6-handed pinochle. We had so many laughs! I think we were up until 11 that night! Late for us!!
Wednesday morning I had the splint on my finger redone at Banner. After that Gary & I did some shopping at Target. The rest of the day was when the real blur set in:
I am happy to report that I am in very good health...after a cat scan on my head, an EKG, lots of blood work and 6 hours of monitoring my vitals, there didn't appear to be anything wrong...except maybe dehydration! They gave me many hours of fluids intravenously. Oh, and these tests were ordered after G called 911 and the firetruck and ambulance arrived to take me away. I was having severe dizziness and my blood pressure was not acting like it should (according to the firemen) so away I went. Got home at 8 that night. I didn't sleep all night tho as my finger was sooo painful! The pain lessened in the morning hours so I slept until almost 11. When I finally got up and got going I decided to go for a pedicure and that was really relaxing. I poured down the liquids all day too. By evening I was feeling like my old self!
We picked Faye & Dave up and our ND friends all met at Filly's for supper...a real, authentic AZ cowboy establishment when some customers come on horseback. We had many laughs there watching the "local" color.
Friday morning Gary met up with the ND guys to golf 18 holes. The girls came here for lunch and bridge. We had a great afternoon. Friday night we were invited to Bz & Joyce's for a fish dinner and, of course, a couple games of rummy. Brusters were there too. We were home by 9:15!

A blur -- this past week

Faye & Dave arrived in Mesa on Monday, the 30th. They joined our big ND group for hamburgers that night and we were all invited to the Glicks (Audrey & Jim) for lemon pie as it was Jim's birthday.
Tuesday I played my first afternoon of bridge with the ladies at the center. I won 75 cents so guess I didn't do too badly. Of course, some of the competition isn't too tough! Miss my Lake Metigoshe players! Tuesday night F&D came over for a few games of pinochle. Wednesday Marge & Tom arrived in the afternoon. Faye & Dave were here for cocktails and then we all went to Uncle Bears for dinner. Val & Wayne Zwak caught up with us there as they arrived from CA that evening. Tom & Marge stayed with us that night.
Thursday morning Marge & I did laundry while the guys ran some errands. We showed them the way to their motel and had lunch at TGI Fridays. They picked Dale & Sandy Henry up at the Mesa airport. We did some grocery shopping. Gary & I went to the driving range as I wanted to try golf to see if it was possible with my injured finger. That evening we all gathered at Faye & Dave's for a short visit.
Friday I did some planning for Super Bpwl Sunday; walked to the golf club to get tee times for Saturday and took a long bike ride. Friday night we were invited to Bz & Joyce's to play rummy with them and the Brusters...Terri & Don.
Saturday at 2 we assembled here (5 couples) for the Wysocki Open golf tourney. It was an absolutely beautiful day and everyone enjoyed the course...Val came in first (beat all the guys) and Gary was second. I wasn't last, but close to it! Saturday night we all went to Old Chicago for dinner.
Sunday I was up bright and early to prepare for Super Bowl guests. We had the Zwaks, Henrys, Bernsteins, Deschamps and Mac & Tim. There were lots of snacks for all to enjoy. We women played bridge all afternoon...didn't care about the game. After the game was over we (Faye & I) served enchilada casseroles, salad and corn bread. I was happy that most of the food got eaten!
Monday morning I picked Marge & Sandy up at 10 and took them to SanTan village to shop. We met Lu Nermyr for lunch at the Kona Grill. We shopped until almost 4 and I was bushed when we got home. However, since it was Monday, that meant meeting our usual group at the Hub for our burger night. Once I was home to stay I headed right to bed!

Fri/Sat/Sun

I've managed to go for a walk or bike ride every day since my little pinkie is keeping me from the pool! Drats! Friday about 1 I met Kathy Marcil at Olive Garden for lunch and a long visit...lots of catching up to do since this was the first time I've seen her since we got to AZ. We went to the movie "The Artist." Not at all what I expected and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone! Can't imagine why it got 10 Academy nominations!
Saturday Gary & I did a few errands; Saturday night Gordy & Peggy came for happy hour and then we went to a new restaurant near us called Uncle Bears. We had the best fish tacos and too many peanuts. After dinner we came back here and played a couple games of Farkle.
Sunday we were pretty lazy most of the day. We went to the 4 p.m. mass and found it to be the most pleasant time of all to go to church. They had a youth choir and it was not at all crowded! I didn't miss the heavy perfume smells that we usually encounter on Sunday mornings or Saturday afternoons. Tonight we watched a Net Flix "My Mom'sNew Boyfriend" with Meg Ryan. It was pretty cute.

Jan. 24-25-26

This is turning out to be quite a different January compared to the last three. The weather is very nice--even for AZ so can't complain about that. I made it to the pool Tuesday & Wednesday mornings; Tuesday afternoon I walked over and signed up for bridge for next week. I'm anxious to get back to playing cards with the ladies here. Wednesday afternoon we drove down to SanTan shopping mall to Sam's club. After that shopping trip, I had a doctor's appointment for my pinkie that I injured on New Year's Eve. I finally managed to find the time and a hand clinic that would look at my drooping finger. After 2 x-rays, they determined that it would heal if I kept a brace on it for 6-10 weeks...that means NO POOL during that time as it can't get wet! It makes cooking and dishes a little awkward to say the least! If the brace falls off, I have to go right in and start all over with the timing for healing. Rats!! Guess it could be something much worse. However, if it doesn't heal, I surely won't be able to play the piano anymore!!!
Wednesday night our neighbors came over & we played a few games of pinochle and rummy. I even managed to bake a batch of cookies! I've almost forgotten how.
Thursday Gary & I both got hair cuts; I went for a manicure (much needed and hard to do with my awkward finger) and then we grocery shopped.

Back to AZ

Thursday and Friday mornings Lisa was working so I got the kids off to school. Since Thursday night was my last night in NC, we had a movie night. Morgan went to elaborate means to set the stage for watching Rapunzel...even dressed up like her. We had popcorn and the three of us all enjoyed the movie a lot! It was much better than I expected.
Friday morning when Lisa got home from work, she drove me to RDU so I could take my flight back to PHX. It was a long day: I left Lisa's at 9:30am eastern time and with a layover in Atlanta I arrived here at 12:20am eastern time so about 15 hrs...Must say I was pretty tired!
Saturday afternoon Scott drove up from his jump school training in Marana, AZ, for an overnight visit. We went out of pizza and had a great time hearing about his experiences floating in the air...we figured he had jumped more than 80 miles thus far and he still has this week to go. He is really enjoying this training. Lisa will be glad for him to get home on Saturday.
He left after brunch on Sunday; Gary & I didn't do much the rest of the day...I'm still suffering from jet lag!
Monday morning bright & early the Wipers picked us up and we headed for Tubac, AZ, to have lunch with Lambda Chis who are wintering in the area: Al Olson, Tom Olson, Gary McFarlen, BZ, Gary W and John Sagsveen. Many had not seen each other since college so there was lots of reminiscing about prior escapades! We got home in time to have burgers at the Hub and then had a couple of games of rummy with Joyce & Bz. It was a full day!

Tuesday to Wednesday

These past 8 days have been quite non-descript. Lisa worked nights, slept part of the day and the kids and I mostly just hung out! I did a little cooking, laundry, housework, reading, knitting and lots of drinking coffee and sitting. The only eventful day was yesterday, the 17th, as that was the day we picked Morgan up early from school and drove into Fayetteville to Lens Crafters so she could pick out her new frames for her glasses. She was quite excited about getting glasses--to say the least! It took her all of 5 seconds to see the frames that she wanted. Thankfully, they fit her and within the hour she was wearing her new look. We actually had a thunderstorm last night...a very unusual phenomenon in NC in January. It rained quite a bit during the night and is bright and sunny today. The temps were almost 70 yesterday-which is also odd for their winter weather.
Today kids are in school, Lisa is sleeping and I'm doing some laundry, cooking and reading. I did get two vests finished for Morgan over the weekend. She was pretty happy to get both of them.

If it's Thursday, where am I?

The week is flying by; Sunday we spent a very quiet day at home all day without any company. We did a little grocery shopping and I actually made a pretty nice evening meal! I cooked extra so Gary would have some good food while I was away.
Monday it was pretty chilly so I skipped the pool. I did laundry and packed my bags for my trip. We did go to the Hub for burgers with Bz, Mac, and the Brusters for our usual Monday night burger. Afterwards we drove over to Bz & Joyce's for a great 6-handed game of rummy. We were home by 10 as I needed a good night's sleep.
Tuesday morning came early as I was up at 4:30 a.m. to catch the 8a.m. flight from Phoenix to RDU. I had a connection in Mpls. Both flights were on time and uneventful...even got my luggage in Raleigh! Wonders never cease! Lisa & Morgan were there to pick me up. We picked Evan up and went to Ruby Tuesdays for dinner. I was exhausted so went to bed by 10...(8 AZ time).
Monday I got up early and went with Lisa to Morgan's eye appt. We took her to school and then went back to the commissary to grocery shop. We stopped at Joanne's and I picked up a couple pieces of fabric to make vests for Morgan while I am here.
Scott is in AZ doing free fall jumping and is having a good time...but I think it is pretty exhausting as he makes about 4 jumps each day.
Today the house is quiet; Lisa is sleeping as she starts her four night 12-hr. shifts tonight. Kids are in school and I'm doing laundry. I do have Izzy and Dexter to keep me company!

End of the first week

I'm having trouble keeping track of days of the week and calendar days. All I know is we've been here a full week now. I made it to the pool every morning--even tho it was less than 50 degrees when I would walk over to the center. The 91 degree salt water really feels good when it's that nippy outside. I did make it to the exercise room again too and put a few more miles on a couple of bikes. So far I haven't hurt myself, so that's a plus!
Thursday we didn't do anything special...no company and we even ate at home. Friday night Mac invited us to Sunland Village's wonderful fish dinner. The clubhouse was packed so we sat outside. It got pretty chilly before we were served, but the food was delicious. We visited with Tim & Mac until about 9p.m.
Today we met Gene & Beth downtown Phoenix at Coach and Willies. We decided to make it a real adventure and rode the Light Rail from Mesa to the heart of Phoenix and then walked to our restaurant. We wanted to meet at a sports bar so we could watch the Bison win the football bowl game that was played in Texas. We had a great visit and enjoyed the game. Also, we didn't have any problems riding the rail and would like to do it again. It's much less stressful than driving in all the traffic. We got back to Mesa just in time for 4 p.m. mass and, as usual, there was standing room only! Tonight we spent a quiet evening at home.

Tues/Wed

Both mornings I managed to get to the pool by 8 a.m. Can't believe how much better I feel after some water exercise. Actually, we don't overdo the exercise so it's probably just the warm water that takes the aching out of stiff joints! We call ourselves the "Bobbers" so that pretty much describes how intense our activity is! I think I learn more about where to eat and where to shop than anything else. We do have some lively political discussions from time to time also.
Tuesday afternoon Gary & I went to the movie "War Horse." It was excellent, but so sad in many parts...a true story from WWI in Europe.
This afternoon I actually made it to the exercise room and found a couple of bikes to ride; I hope I can get up in the morning after all that activity! Tonight we were invited to Roger & Dorine's for a few games of race-horse pinochle and farkle. Dorine & I started out lucky, but our luck ended after the first two games. We were home by 9:30 and that's late for our area! The weather was perfect these 2 days.

Two days down

New Year's Day we had Mac & Tim over for a chili feed. We spent the evening just catching up with the news of the McFarlen family.
Today I spent over an hour at the pool first thing this morning. It really felt good to get in that nice warm salt water. Gary & I had the car washed; it was absolutely filthy after the trip down. Can't believe what a fantastic job they do at the car washes here...we have nothing to compare them to in ND. Then we went to the mall for a few items. Tonight Joyce & Bz picked us up and we met Mac & Tim at TGI Fridays for a great meal. Joyce & Bz came in and we played some mean games of rummy until about 11 p.m. That's the latest I've been up in a long time. I'm finally beginning to feel rested and a little organized here in the condo. Weather was perfect today!

2012 begins

Our days leading up to the New Year were long and grueling! We left Metigoshe about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday. The first 200 miles were slow, icy and foggy! We decided to take hwy 3 and eventually connect with hwy 83 and once we hit the SD border the road deteriorated but the visibility improved. However, it rained the whole day as we crossed SD. We drove as far as North Platte, Neb., the first night. Stayed in the Comfort Inn, but didn't get much sleep. The bed was too hard or maybe we were just too tired for sleep.
Friday we were on the road again at 6:30. Hwy 83 in Nebraska is a very good road and there wasn't much traffic. We made it as far as Albuquerque that day, had a quick dinner at Applebees and collapsed into bed at the Sleep Inn very early. We were up and out on the road by 7:00 Saturday. Our drive was shorter, but there was lots of traffic on I40. We arrived in Mesa about 2 p.m.
After unpacking the car, Gary went for a few groceries and I began putting things away. Unfortunately, I did something in haste as I grabbed a pile of clothes and I either broke or badly sprained the little finger on my right hand. Ouch! That slowed me down a bit as I had to ice it a few times. It looks as tho I will never have a straight finger again, but as Mom would say, "You'll die with that finger!"
We were invited to Bz & Joyce's to ring in the New Year, but we opted out and I hit the bed by 8 p.m...too tired to even read, much less stay up long enough to watch the ball drop on Times Square. Am I getting old or what?
New Year's Day we continued to put things away and made another grocery run. It takes awhile to have enough groceries to actually make anything and we're sick of eating out so right now we have a big pot of chili cooking and we're waiting for Mac & Tim to join us for a bowl of hot stuff!
